About Team4Nature

“Business, Community and Nature, Together for a better world”

Our Mission:
“To strengthen local businesses and build pride of place so that local communities thrive, whilst enjoying the many benefits that arise from a deep connection with the rest of nature”.

Background
Nature doesn’t just provide our air, food and water. We are all part of nature and this connection contributes to our health and wellbeing. Understanding the power of nature is as important in our lives as learning times tables is in mathematics.

Unfortunately, since the start of the industrial revolution, as a society we have forgotten how important nature is. As a result, wildlife has had a pretty tough time. For example, the UK hedgehog population has declined by 97% since the 1950’s.

There were three main factors that have led to us being disconnected from the rest of nature:

1. Industrialisation

Today, there are far fewer of us working on the land and in nature. Our environment tends to consist of a room in a building, factory floor or the inside of a vehicle, rather than the great outdoors.

2. Urbanisation

By 1950, 79% of the UK population lived in cities. This had risen further, to 90% by 2010. As a result fewer people have countryside on their doorstep.

3. Early Sociology

The sociologists, who first studied people and society, treated nature as being an external obstacle to social life, which needed taming. At this critical time in human development, the policy makers had overlooked the power of nature and the need to protect it, for the good of all!

The Good News

By the late twentieth century it became clear that we all lived on a fragile earth. Today, sociologists recognise that restoring nature will require radical social and technological change.

The good news is that we now have the science which clearly shows just how important the rest of nature is to our happiness, health and wellbeing. The UK is also blessed with a range of wonderful wildlife charities and thousands of community groups that are passionately working to restore UK Nature for the good of all.

There is a lot of work to be done. The State of Nature 2016 Report found that the UK was one of the most nature-depleted countries in the world. We were ranked 189th out of 218 countries for protecting our natural wealth!

At first, it might feel like an impossible task to turn things around and get UK nature thriving again, but there are certainly enough caring businesses, community groups and individuals to do just that, if they work together. So don’t despair and read on to find out how you, your family and friends can make a difference in your community.

How Team4Nature Works

Team4Nature was created in response to the findings of The State of Nature 2013 Report. We provide the stage for caring and visionary businesses, amazing community groups and passionate individuals to rise together and create thriving neighbourhoods with a bright future. Our Team4Nature local guardians work on the ground to strengthen these exciting networks and find more heroes that possess the qualities necessary to make a difference in their local community:

  • Team4Nature local networks are designed to offer something for everyone, whilst building strength through teamwork. Businesses, community groups and individuals can all get involved and make a difference in their local area.

  • Each Team4Nature local network covers a parliamentary constituency.

  • Each Team4Nature local network will have its own community website area to promote local business and serve as a resource to help people connect with nature, projects and organisations in their local area.

  • Each Team4Nature local network will have one or more Team4Nature local guardians, working on the ground to help make things happen, organise network meetings and strengthen the local community.

  • By connecting people to the local businesses and other organisations that care, the level of local pride of place and sustainable economic strength will rise. Local supply chains and employment hubs will also be built, as each Team4Nature local network strengthens.
